Rough Hewn Wood
In a box of rough hewn wood
With splinters and jagged edges
Where animals find their feed
And only the swaddling clothing
To protect him from the rough wood
Such a humble beginning for my Lord
Who came to make me a king!
On a cross of rough hewn wood
With splinters and jagged edges
Where criminals before had died
And with nothing for clothing
To protect him from the rough wood
Such a humble ending for my Lord
Who came to make me a king!

On October 10, 2006 the Tri-State Chaplaincy Committee and the Pastoral Care Department
held a special Open House for the newly renovated Chapel. Board members were on hand
from 11:00 AM until 2:00 PM to greet visitors and explain some of the many programs
and services that the Chaplaincy provides. Refreshments were served and an array
of memorabilia from years past was on display.

On Sunday, October 15, 2006, the Tri-State Chaplaincy Committee of East Liverpool
City Hospital held its annual fund-raiser Singspiration at the First Church of the
Nazarene located at 670 Walnut Street in East Liverpool.
John McGraw was the program director this year and Kevan Cunningham was the Master
of Ceremonies. The evening began with a prelude consisting of a medley of hymns with
McGraw at the piano and Brad Bonam at the organ around 5:40 p.m.
The formal fund-raising program started at 6:00 p.m. with a piano duet by Maxine
Sutherland and Carol Walton, from Trinity Presbyterian Church. The evening continued
on with anthems from the following choirs: Covenant Presbyterian Church, First Evangelical
Presbyterian Church, First Church of the Nazarene, Long’s Run Presbyterian Church,
and Trinity Presbyterian Church.
Pastor Rob Merki and his wife Chris sang a duet. John McGraw and Beth Weir also presented
vocal solos. The congregation had the opportunity to join in on several favorite
hymns led by Kevan Cunningham.
Brad Bonam, Youngstown State University’s only organ major, provided a special organ
solo during the offering. Local quartet “By His Grace” concluded the program, with
the combined choirs singing a special choral benediction.

Hands Firm and Gentle
(To Mom)
Hands so firm and gentle
Touched my life with love and strength.
The hands that wiped away my tears,
Protected me in time of fear.
Hands that protected my fevered brow,
Disciplined me to guide my way.
In memories of childhood days,
In times of hope and times of fear,
In the midst of the common days,
And in days of victory and pride,
I remember with love and resolve
Those hands so firm and gentle.
